The South Carolina Hockey Club made history during the 2019 – 20 season, finishing with a 21-1-1 record and the program’s first ACHA Nationals bid since its founding in 2001.
The phenomenal season ended with a 5-2 Regionals victory over Ole Miss, which punched the team’s ticket to Nationals before the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.
While the Gamecocks weren’t able to make their mark in Dallas, the program’s growth both on and off the ice this season was truly remarkable. 2019 – 20 saw the South Carolina Hockey Club smash home attendance records for charitable causes and fundraising with a newly introduced jersey sale; all while also notching its third straight Palmetto Cup victory against Clemson.
Underclassmen made their presence known this year, with top-scorer Julian Reiss totaling 40 points (25G – 15A) in 23 games. Ronan Egan (13G – 22A) and Owen Thomas (15G – 19A) also posted explosive numbers for the Gamecocks.
Reiss and goalie Liam Gormley were selected for the ACHA All South Region First and Second teams respectively, and Coach Allan Sirois was named SECHC Coach of the Year. Cory Hawkinson, Matt Owen, and Alex Siegfried were awarded ACHA Academic All-American status.
While the Gamecocks look forward to building off this year’s success, the program’s three seniors, Siegfried, Hawkinson, and Duncan Hickman, will be missed.
Despite not getting to write the ending they wanted, the 2019 – 20 squad will be remembered as the team that made Gamecock Hockey a topic of national conversation. While the program looks forward to next season, it’s clear the best is yet to come.
